(9 Jun 2017) Kosovo prepares to hold a parliamentary election on Sunday, a year earlier than it was due, in which 19 political parties, five coalitions and two citizens' initiatives will elect 120 seats in parliament, 20 of them reserved for ethnic Serb and other minorities.
On 10 May, Kosovo's government lost a no-confidence vote, setting up a stage for early elections.
Prime Minister Isa Mustafa's government lost in a 78-34 vote with opposition parties blaming his cabinet for being unable to carry out its programme and pass important laws.
The government had been hobbled by its inability to secure a majority in parliament over a border demarcation deal with neighboring Montenegro, despite pressure from the US government.
Kosovo is the only Western Balkan country with no visa-free regime with European Union's Schengen member countries and Brussels has said clearly that Kosovo should pass the demarcation deal before its citizens may enjoy free travel.
