Yeovil and Rushden were locked in a season long battle for the Conference title in 2000/01, in which Yeovil struck a crucial early blow by winning 2-1 at Nene Park on 4th November 2000. Warren Patmore scored a delightful chip in the first half, and after record Conference signing Justin Jackson equalised for Rushden, Darren Way stepped up to score the winning penalty in the 83rd minute. The attendance of 5283 contained around 1300 Yeovil fans in the impressive AirWair stand, which is as much as they would give us!
Rushden would ultimately win the title in the penultimate game of the season but it was a fantastic achievement from Yeovil to challenge Rushden's large and expensively assembled squad with a much smaller squad of inexperienced players, the majority of whom were under 23. Unfortunately injury and suspensions to such a small squad took their toll after Christmas but many of the same players would be in Gary Johnson's team who won the Conference two years later.
