She sold her first story to Highlights at age 14 and went on to become a New York Times best-selling and multi-award winning author. Rita discusses how she nurtured her gift for writing and got her start as an author. She also shares her writing process including how she develops such rich characters and talks about working with editors as champions for your book.
Rita Williams-Garcia is a New York Times bestselling author of books for children and young adults including One Crazy Summer, PS Be Eleven, Gone Crazy in Alabama, Bottle Cap Boys Dancing on Royal Street and Blue Tights. She has won numerous honors including the Coretta Scott King Award, Newbery Honor, Scott O’Dell Prize for Historical Fiction and is a National Book Award finalist. She has also served on faculty at the Vermont College of Fine Arts Writing for Children MFA Program.
