Leitmotifs are great. Drawing associations between different melodic figures and characters, places, or elements within a story are a great way to enrich the storytelling of a game while simultaneously giving players an easy way to connect with the music. All great leitmotifs are great musical ideas, but not all great musical ideas make great leitmotifs. Join me as I take a look at the leitmotif-heavy soundtrack of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky games to try and figure out what kind of musical ideas make for great leitmotifs.
