Two bodies were found Sunday in the rubble at the site where a building exploded in New York's East Village last week.
The remains have not yet been officially identified, but authorities believe they are the two people reported missing after the explosion last Thursday, according to New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro.
Three buildings on 2nd Ave. collapsed and four others were damaged last week when an explosion and gas-fueled fire took place.
In August, Con Edison shut off gas lines at the building for 10 days after discovering the lines had been tampered with, according to Alfonso Quiroz, a spokesman for the company.
Inspectors were on site again earlier the same day of the blast, and locked the line after determining it was was still unsafe. Later, the owner of a sushi restaurant in the building smelled gas and called the landlord, who alerted a general contractor instead of calling 911 or Con Edison.
Reports say an explosion took place when the contractor and the owner’s son later went into the basement and opened a door.
