I feel that Elkjær gets unfairly forgotten nowadays despite being one of the best footballers of the 80's — he finished in top-3 for Ballon d'Or in 3 consecutive years and performed one of the most miraculous feats in history of Italian football, leading a small provincial club Hellas Verona to their first (and, until this day, the only one) scudetto — in the time when every Serie A club had at least one world-class star and Platini's Juventus was dominating Europe.
Elkjær was also instrumental for Denmark during their greatest ever spell — the Danish side, nicknamed "Danish Dynamite" were genuinely one of the greatest international teams in the world, seriously competing for 1984 Euros and 1986 World Cup. In a team filled with stars — experienced Morton Olsen, tireless Søren Lerby, enigmatic young prodigy Michael Laudrup, but Preben Elkjær Larsen was their brightest star throughout those years.
