Bernhard Steinhoff, MD, PhD, Kork Epilepsy Center, Kehl-Kork, Germany, discusses the enduring challenge of managing drug-resistant epilepsy and new approaches being employed that have the potential to change outcomes for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy in the future. Prof. Steinhoff notes that not only are more efficacious pharmacological treatments needed, but large strides towards precision medicine are of critical importance. Steps towards personalizing treatment have begun in several genetically defined epilepsy syndromes such as tuberous sclerosis complex and Dravet syndrome. This interview took place during the European Academy of Neurology 2021 congress.
