Dr. Turner presents research update on the exploitable brain to help us understand and plan prevention at the Stop Financial Exploitation conference in Gainesville, FL. The one-day conference was held to gather present and future leaders and stakeholders to stop exploitation with a multi-disciplinary approach to the fight against financial exploitation through science, policy, and prosecution strategy. Leaders in science and law joined to share history, information, and strategies.
Sponsors included the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar, AFELA (Academy of Florida Elder Law Attorneys), Elder Options, Elder Care of Alachua County, and the North Central Florida Senior Advocacy Network. Shannon Miller served as the Chairperson of the Stop Exploitation Event 2019 and her introduction to the conference is included here. Her goal for the conference was to "...lay another brick in the foundation to stop exploitation."
The Good News In Aging: Heres what we know about aging cognition:
Cognition declines with aging. Memory functioning, executive functioning, numeracy, arithmetic, calculations. Overall task performance declines.
Knowledge, experience gained over lifespan, world knowledge, and wisdom continues to improve with aging. We call this "crystallized capital" which can stabilize the performance metric so it doesn't drop as dramatically as task performance. Crystallized capital can also help seniors keep financial acuity longer.
Aging is both of these: cognition and crystallized capital.
How do we access that lived experience to help seniors make better decisions? The action of pausing by taking a breath can help bring their experience into forefront for better decision making. Seniors often feel social pressure so taking a pause can help prevent exploitation.
Dr. Gary Turner, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology has significantly contributed to the study of the cognitive neuroscience of aging. His specialty is Cognitive Neuroscience and Neurorehabilitation.
Dr. Turner's research uses MRI techniques to investigate how brain functioning is related to cognitive changes that occur in older adulthood. His recent studies expand beyond the commonly held assumption that cognitive aging is short-hand for cognitive decline. His research has shown that cognitive aging is also associated with cognitive gains in areas such as creative thinking as well as wisdom in solving real world problems. Dr. Turner and his students are also working to develop cognitive training programs to improve concentration and focus in later life.
