Track #6 of the album “Augsburg Choir of Minneapolis," 1964-1965 Season. Composed by Francis Poulenc. Directed by Leland B. Sateren.
From the album:
“My soul is sorrowful unto death: abide here and watch with me;
now you shall see a crowd which will surround me.
You will take flight, and I will go to be sacrificed for you.
Lo, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
(Matt. 26:38, 45)
Among the most sensitive and expressive choral works of Francis Poulenc are the four 'Penitential Motets' which he wrote in 1938. 'Tristis Est Anima Mea' is the fourth in the series and gives credence to Virgil Thomson's 1945 assessment that Poulenc's 'choral pieces are tops in our time.'
The solo soprano voices are those of Adeline Rosenquist and Janet Fischer.”
