What is a Data Architect | CF Tech
A data architect is an IT specialist that builds and manages data systems, establishes policies for data storage and access, coordinates several data sources within an organization, and integrates new data technologies into current IT infrastructures. Data architects can serve as liaisons between the IT department and other departments, ensuring that data gathering and dissemination rules are in line with the company's operational and strategic goals. They usually collaborate with other members of a data team, such as data engineers, data miners, data scientists, and data analysts, on data collection, data storage, data security, and data system access.
The Data Architect's Function
The Open Group defines three major areas of concern for data architects in its TOGAF guidelines: data management, data migration, and data governance. These are broad challenges that, in larger organizations, may demand the attention of a data architecture group or department. Data architects rely on a deep understanding of contemporary data technology systems, such as common operating and database systems, networking protocols, data analytics tools and methods, business intelligence software, and other data-centric elements of IT infrastructures, to effectively address these concerns.
While data engineers are usually in charge of the technical challenges of building and maintaining an organization's data storage and distribution system, data analysts and data scientists are in charge of data modeling, data interpretation, and data reporting. However, their positions may overlap. Data architects, on the other hand, are primarily responsible for building and managing the technical infrastructures and policy frameworks that enable secure and efficient data collection, storage, and distribution inside an organization.
The Data Management Association (DAMA International) publishes an International Guide to Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBOK) and runs a certification program for Certified Data Management Professionals. Data architecture is defined by DAMA as "the overall structure of data and data-related resources as an important part of the enterprise architecture," and it delineates many expertise areas for data architects in addition to data storage systems:
Data stored in the cloud
The architecture of linked data
Data on the go
Data that is freely available
Data architecture with semantics
Data on the internet
There are seven general skill categories that are regarded fundamental for data and/or IT architects in the "Skills Framework" outlined by the Open Group in its TOGAF guidelines:
