A2 986 began mainline testing on Monday the 2nd of May with a series of trips between Newport and Sunshine. This allowed for testing at low speed in a controlled environment. Some adjustments were made since its last trial regarding components such as the slide bar. This was the first time the locomotive had run on the mainline in it's new paint scheme and with smoke deflectors. Overall testing has been a success.
The trials also provided a train to base radio for communication and to help with driver training of V/Line crews on the goods only railway line to Sunshine.
The trial runs were made possible by V/Line and the RTBU Victoria with their assistance in utilising this testing for driver training.
