In this episode of the Perspective based on Clash in Taliban. The stunning Taliban takeover of Afghanistan has divided the world. While the majority is of course shocked by the abject surrender of the US army, and also the manner in which American forces fled the country. There are others who want to give the Taliban a legitimate chance to prove themselves. But this view implies a tacit support to militant organisations. Afghan watchers and experts are of the opinion that the Kalashnikov culture of the Pashtun-dominated Taliban will invariably result in a showdown in the outfit itself, triggering a bitter fight over the spoils of war. This fear came to the fore recently when there was news of an alleged fight at the presidential place in Kabul over who should take credit for the takeover of the country. The ISI has used the Haqqani Network to target Indian Embassy in Kabul in the past. It is also active in steering the Sunni Pashtun force in a direction aligned to Pakistan. There are thus many imponderables: Not the least being. What is the Taliban fighting for: Is it power or is it pelf?, Why doesn’t Pakistan want Mullah Baradar?, Is a pro-Taliban narrative good or bad?, Will the factional rivalries in Taliban pose further problems for neighbors?, And the big question: Is Afghanistan heading for a civil war?.
