Diplomacy in a Time of Change with Monika Schmutz Kırgöz
Today Monika Schmutz Kirgöz is the Swiss Consul General in Istanbul; when she was born, Swiss women couldn’t even vote. Switzerland’s path towards gender equality in the past four decades has been rapid, but travelling that path along with her county, Kirgöz has had to push through a lot of resistance to reach the place she is today. Here she reflects on why gender gaps persist, and challenges all of us to throw aside thinking that might contribute to the problem.
Monika Schmutz Kirgöz is the Consul General of Switzerland in Istanbul. Kirgöz began working in diplomatic service in 1996, and has since worked in Rome, Ankara, and Israel.
