Italy Vlog episode 4: The fourth episode from our road trip through Italy: Apart from being described as “Italy in a nutshell”, Macerata is also home to Vincisgrassi, a local speciality similar to lasagne that is said to have been invented in 1799. The main difference between lasagne and Vincisgrassi lies in the ragù, as they’re made with different kinds of meat.
Although there are lots of different recipes that vary from household to household, most Vincisgrassi versions include chicken intestines, such as the liver and heart, sweetbreads, pancetta with Béchamel sauce, sometimes truffles and herbs and spices. Macerata, would be our last stop in Le Marche before driving to Montepulciano in Tuscany.
In the previous episodes we spent some days eating and sightseeing in Rome, rented a classic Fiat 500 and drove to the Le Marche region in Italy. After exploring the towns of Ascoli Piceno and Ripatransone, it was time to relax a little and plan a beach day on Italy’s east coast. This plan changed slightly, when we discovered a nice looking viewpoint on Google Maps, which we ended up hiking to before finally spending the afternoon at the beach. For dinner we decided to have a picnic back at our hotel with a Pan di Stelle tasting as dessert.

In Tuscany we’re staying close to Montepulciano and San Gimignano, but we’ll also explore many more towns from there, such as Siena, Pienza and Volterra. Our road trip ends in Florence, where we’ll also spend a few days sightseeing and trying out food specialities.
