The focus of the Pelvic Curl demonstrated here by James, is to promote segmental control of the spine. Ideally we want co-contraction of the abdominals and the hamstrings as you get to the top of the movement, so there is no flare of the rib cage and the body is in a long line from shoulders to hips to knees. Always think or reaching out through the knees to promote length in the spine and beware of compressing the spine too much on the way down - think of length.
