Last Saturday was a Footpath walking event in Tomioka Town, one of the best-attended tours this year with over fifty participants walking through the Shimizu area with the help of a local guide. People came from all over Tohoku and up from Tokyo to join the morning walk, which included a homemade lunch made by local helpers and a roundtable discussion about the programme as a whole.
Based on UK footpath walking culture, the Footpath programme encourages tourists to visit smaller, lesser-known areas to enjoy the abundant nature and interact with local people. It also functions as part of revitalisation efforts in the eastern coastal region that was badly affected by the tsunami in 2011, looking to showcase how the area is healing in the aftermath of the disaster.
