This is the second leg of my cross-country Amtrak trip in Coachclass from New York to Los Angeles and probably my most memorable train trip thus far. We begin in Chicago Union Station, travel through Illinois before traveling along the Mississippi River through Southwestern Iowa and settling for a gorgeous sunset in Missouri.
Day 2 begins with an awesome Sunrise through the high plains of Eastern Colorado before gently winding through the New Mexico Rockies in the rain, shine, and snow, ascending the famed Raton and Glorieta Passes and passing decades-old semaphore signals still in operation. Albuquerque is another extended stop and we then start bolting through the desert at 90 mph along BNSF's Southern Transcon before settling in for an early night around Winslow, AZ.
The last morning begins early too, with a quick look inside Barstow's Railway Museum, and before I know it we arrive into Los Angeles 17 minutes early.
With that, I've travelled from coast-to-coast from New York to Los Angeles for a combined total of 67 hours, in coach, using exclusively rewards points.
