CITES is a result of a resolution adopted by IUCN's meeting in 1963.
It took 10 years for the text of the convention to be agreed upon in a meeting of representatives of 80 countries in Washington, D.C., United States of America, on 3 March 1973
CITES came into force on 1st July 1975. The CITES Secretariat is administered by UNEP (The United Nations Environment Programme) and is located in Geneva, Switzerland.
World Wildlife Day has been celebrated every year on the 3rd of March since 2013.
Currently, there are 184 members or parties of CITES.
The 19th COP will be held in Panama, the Republic of Panama.
