Good Day Winterfans.
Why did I buy telemark equipment as a previously enthusiastic Snowboarder?
Pretty simple really. It is Christmas, the time of giving. So this season, I am giving my attention and time to my less action/adrenaline oriented friends. Meaning, I hit the slopes with them, without hitting every rail in every park because that would bore them. To not get bored myself, I decided to teach myself telemark skiing, even though I can barely Ski anymore after being on the board for the last 15 years.
I get to be preoccupied with learning a new skill while it also getting 5 times the toll on endurance, while I get to spend quality time with friends and family! Everybody wins!
Added bonus, they get to laugh at me falling every once in a while.
I Ditched Snowboarding for Telemark Skiing and You Should Too!
P.S. Use this tactic wisely.

The History of Telemark Skiing 🏔️⛷️ | Origins, Evolution, and Modern Renaissance
Telemark skiing, known for its graceful free-heel technique, is steeped in rich history that dates back to Norway in the 19th century. Named after the Telemark region, this iconic skiing style was first popularized by Sondre Norheim, often called the "Father of Modern Skiing." His pioneering techniques and innovative ski design—featuring curved sides and bindings that secured the heel—revolutionized skiing and laid the groundwork for modern alpine and Nordic skiing.
Initially a method for transportation and hunting in snowy terrains, Telemark skiing soon evolved into a competitive sport. The first official ski competitions, held in Norway during the late 1800s, showcased the dynamic and versatile Telemark turn, characterized by its deep, lunging motion. These events helped spread the technique throughout Scandinavia and beyond.
However, Telemark skiing declined in popularity during the 20th century as alpine skiing and its fixed-heel bindings became the dominant trend. It wasn't until the 1970s Nordic skiing revival in North America that Telemark skiing experienced a modern resurgence. Enthusiasts in places like Colorado, Vermont, and Utah rediscovered its unique appeal, blending it with the growing backcountry skiing culture.
Today, Telemark skiing symbolizes a balance between tradition and innovation, merging the artistry of classic skiing with modern gear advancements like lightweight bindings, plastic boots, and powder-specific skis. The style is celebrated for its freedom of movement, technical challenge, and the deep connection it fosters with the mountains.
Whether you're drawn by its heritage, aesthetic beauty, or adventurous spirit: Telemark skiing continues to captivate skiers worldwide, earning its place as a cherished discipline in the global skiing community.
