The foreboding piano keys that open Backstabbers signalled a new sound for the message song. The song came about when Gene McFadden got a call from John Whitehead who was inspired to write his own songs after watching Gamble and Huff in action. First they came up with title, Backstabbers and then the lyrics flowed like water. Whitehead wrote down the lyrics and read them to Kenny Gamble who invited the songwriting duo to sit down with him at a piano to finish the song. Gamble felt this was a song for the O'Jays who interpreted the song exactly as the writers felt it. MFSB played on the music track, and also did a jazzy instrumental version for their 1972 "Freddie's Dead/Backstabbers" LP. This version incorporates both to make this special extended remix.
