Sri Vinayaka Temple at Anegudde, Kumbhashi is one of the beautiful & most loved temples in the Udupi District of Karnataka, situated about 7kms from Kundapur. It is one of the seven sacred places (Saptha Kshethra) in the region of Coastal Karnataka (i.e.Parashurama Kshetra).
Anegudde (Gajagiri in Samskrit) means Elephant Hillock , and it is the abode of the elephant god Vinayaka. According to Mythology, the great sage Gouthama had his hermitage at Kumbhashi. Also believed that the sage Agasthya performed a ritual (yajna) to please the rain god.
'Kumbhashi' the other name is said to be derived from Kumbhasura, a demon who tried to disrupt the yajna by troubling the sages, hence Bheema (strongest among the pandavas) during their exile period killed Kumbhasura with an Asi or sword, blessed by lord Ganapathi, and facilitated the completion of the yajna. Kumbhashi is also known as the place of Salvation(Mukthi Sthala).
