In the opening scene of Arcane’s first episode, Powder sings a song about the bridge between Zaun and Piltover. The song lyrics are about a poor person humbly requesting alms from their rich “friend across the river”. This is contrasted by the enforcers from Piltover murdering poor undercity people on the bridge. Later, in episode 7, Jinx hums this same song right before she kills Marcus. What is the meaning of this song? How does it aid a scene that is meant to encapsulate the entire story of the series, as Amanda Overton mentioned in Bridging the Rift?
Here are the lyrics:
Dear friend across the river
My hands are cold and bare
Dear friend across the river
I'll take what you can spare
I ask of you a penny
My fortune it will be
I ask you without envy
We raise no mighty towers
Our homes are built of stone
So come across the river
And find the world below
