STORYLINE:

As the world greeted the news Friday that Mohamed ElBaradei had shared the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize with the organisation he heads, the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iranian protesters gathered for anti-US demonstrations in Tehran.

Demonstrators voiced support for their country's nuclear activities. The International Atomic Energy Organisation (IAEA) ratified a resolution against Iran in its last meeting.

Worshippers congregated after Friday prayers, gathering at Enqelab Square, in the centre of the city.

Hundreds chanted slogans condemning Europe and America's position towards Iran's nuclear programme.

The United States, Israel and others accuse Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons.

Israel fears such weapons could be directed toward its cities, and have repeatedly identified Iran as their biggest threat.

Iran says its nuclear programme is strictly for peaceful purposes.

Some protestors gathered outside the British Embassy, the scene of several demonstrations during the past week.

ElBaradei has led international efforts to put pressure on Iran.

Last month, the IAEA passed a resolution warning Iran that it would be referred to the United Nations Security Council unless it allayed fears about its nuclear programme.

In response, Iran has threatened that unless the IAEA backs down, it will resume uranium enrichment, block short-notice intrusive inspections of its nuclear facilities and cut trade with countries that support the resolution.

At the same time, Iran has said it is ready to reopen negotiations with European countries over its nuclear programme.

Talks between Britain, Germany and France - which negotiated on behalf of the 25-nation European Union - and Iran, collapsed in early August after Iran resumed uranium reprocessing activities at a facility in central Iran.

Tehran had suspended uranium conversion work under a November 2004 deal with the European nations.
