(21 Dec 2017) Marta Rovira, the No. 2 candidate for the left-wing republican ERC (Republican Left of Catalonia) party, voted on Friday in the Catalan town of Vic, just outside of Barcelona.
Vic is known as a stronghold for the independentist movement.
Ousted former Vice-President Oriol Junqueras, the leader of the party, remains in detention in Estremera prison, near Madrid, following the disputed Catalan independence referendum of the 1st October.
Catalans vote Thursday for a new regional government in a hotly contested and pivotal election aimed at breaking a bitter deadlock over the issue of independence.
The vote was called by Spain's central authorities after seizing control of the northeastern region in late October, and will be closely watched beyond the country's borders.
