It was billed as the British Met Gala, the answer to Anna Wintour’s annual “fashion Oscars” in New York where tickets cost almost $50,000. Seats at the Vogue World event in London may have been a more manageable £150 each, but the show only lasted an hour.
Then again, with Sir Ian McKellen, Naomi Campbell and Stormzy involved, and proceedings directed by The Crown’s Stephen Daldry, perhaps that represents good value for money. Some tickets went to students free of charge and the event was streamed live from the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.
This was a variety performance for a rather different queen — one whose crown has been the subject of fierce gossip in recent months. The 73-year-old Wintour, now also Condé Nast’s global editorial director, co-hosted the event with British Vogue’s outgoing editor, Edward Enninful, 51. The magazine’s first male and first black editor announced in June that he would step back to become an “editorial adviser” next January, but many believe he expected to ascend to Wintour’s throne in New York instead.
