Composed in 1952, "Joy of Spring (Xin Chun Le)" by MAO Yuan (b. 1926) is considered to be one of the most well-known Chinese violin pieces, especially during Chinese New Year period. During the 1950s, there was a rise in popularity of Western orchestras in China, but the music they played consisted of mainly imported Western classical repertoire. The piece was partly aimed to create something original and local using Western instruments, and in this case it is based on the recomposition from a Hebei Folksong called "Mai Jiao Zi" (Selling Dumplings), which was a common practice at that time where Chinese composers take folksongs as their source material. The rhythmical opening and the sweet melody in the middle section brings about the joyful atmosphere of festivities and the anticipation of better days to come. Despite its innocently straightforward structure, there is nevertheless still some level of expectation with regards to the violinist's technique and musicality to execute this piece well. The piano accompaniment, on the other hand, takes the role of being the icing on the cake.
