AVG made its stand several months ago when it became the first Internet security company to make DNT functionality an integral part of its software suite. But we believe AVG is putting more power in the consumer's hands than a default browser DNT setting ever could. While bold in its about-face on the Digital Advertising Alliance, Microsoft's approach is a decidedly passive one with mixed results at best for the consumer.
Data is being collected everywhere on the web, but most people don't understand what's being collected about them or how to take any control in the matter. While online tracking isn't necessarily bad—for example, many trusted sites do this to improve user experience or to offer up products and services the user would actually find beneficial and interesting—we should have the power to decide for ourselves whether and how to be tracked.
Our DNT feature works by blocking ad networks that collect or store user data in ways that impact their privacy. Our DNT feature checks whether a site collects data, which may affect one's privacy and then report back to the customer. While the feature is activated by default, our customers can manage their online privacy settings as they see fit.
Some may prefer targeted ads that result from third-party trackers than off-the-mark ads blindly distributed throughout the web. Others may be alarmed by the prospect of advertisers following them around the Internet.
With AVG's Do Not Track feature, how people are tracked is completely up to them.
