Liechtenstein is a tiny, European microstate, nestled between Switzerland and Austria, on the banks of the Rhine river. It is the sixth smallest country in the world, comprising only 62 square miles. That means you could fit about five Liechtensteins inside New York city.

Catholicism is the official state religion. Liechtenstein was the last country in Europe to grant women the right to vote. As of 2024, 84% of Liechtensteiners are Christian. For comparison, only 66% of Americans are Christian. They held out until 1984, and even then, women’s suffrage barely passed, with only 51% in favor.
Liechtenstein is also one of the last true monarchies in Europe. Not one of these cringe, fake, symbolic monarchies- no no. An absolute monarchy.
Given how powerful the Prince is, you might expect Liechtenstein to be an authoritarian dictatorship. But on the contrary, it is one of the freest nations in the world, with very low taxes and a flourishing, innovative economy.
