Mycobacterium smegmatis cells were stained with a green fluorescent dye and imaged at 10 minute intervals while growing in a microfluidic channel. The green stain is retained on old cell wall. The images are pseudo-colored red for contrast, so new cell growth appears red but not green. Each cell elongates from primarily one pole before dividing.
