Matthew Allison is a PhD student at the University of Birmingham, and part of an international team of researchers on the POROCLIM Expedition. This geophysical research survey is currently taking place on the (very choppy) Atlantic ocean.
By surveying the oceanic crust in the Atlantic Ocean the research team hopes to improve understanding of a past global warming event called the 'Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum' (PETM)
While the mechanisms for greenhouse gas emissions from PETM differ from today’s anthropogenic warming (caused by human activity), the team hopes to gain valuable information about climate responses and feedback cycles to rapid warming events.
