STORYLINE:
The European Union’s special envoy for talks between Serbia and Kosovo arrived in Pristina on Thursday for meetings with Kosovo’s leaders in another push to hammer out a deal on normalizing ties between the two countries.
Miroslav Lajcak met with Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti to discuss a formal signing of the proposed agreement.
Last month, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kurti gave their tacit approval to the EU plan to end months of political crisis and help improve bilateral ties.
The agreement stipulates that both countries would recognize their respective documents and national symbols, and respect their independence, autonomy and territorial integrity, the right of self-determination, the protection of human rights, and non-discrimination.
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, a decade after a brutal war between separatist ethnic Albanian rebels and Serb forces.
Most Western nations have recognized Kosovo’s independence, but Serbia and its allies Russia and China have not.
