If we pull on the lip, a small fleshy thread that ties it to the gum can be noticed. Sometimes this filament is too short or creates tension on the gum, which may bring about a space between the teeth or recession of the gum, baring the root. The same phenomenon can sometimes be noticed under the tongue. A problem with phonation or swallowing may result from this and influence the development of the child. The impact at the gum level may be the formation of a space between two teeth or recession of the gum, uncovering the root. This filament can easily be displaced: this is called a frenectomy. The intervention is done under a local anaesthesia and takes little time and just a few stitches. In order to keep the operation to a minimum, it is preferable to let nature do the work whenever possible, since the growth of adult canines often brings about the natural closing of the diastema. This is the reason why, in most cases, we recommend that the frenectomy be performed only after the growth of the adult canines is completed. The frenectomy is a simple operation which, in many cases, spares you treatments that are much more complex.
