Hot and steamy last stage in Rwanda ~ Schelling remains on podium GC Rwanda, despite ‘not feeling well’ in final stage.
ISN’s goal for Rwanda accomplished: podium.
Schelling and Awet fourth and fifth in final stage.
“Happy, because bad legs”, Swiss climber says.
The first few minutes after the finish must have been hard for ISN-leader Patrick Schelling. He finished behind a direct threat for the GC podium, and did not know whether he finished in time, or whether he had lost his bronze medal.
After a few minutes of fear, the confirmation was there: Schelling remained on the podium, distancing the number 4 with only two seconds.
Stage 8 exploded relatively late, compared to other stages in the Tour du Rwanda, but in the last hour of racing, all GC-competitors were hunting for the GC podium.
Schelling lost the wheel of his direct threat for GC, and was frightened about his podium spot, but after the confirmation of soigneur Brent, there was the relief.
Soon after his characterizing smile reappeared as well. “I was worried on that final climb. I thought I lost too much time”, he said.
Before the race, podium was one of the goals for ISN in Rwanda, and Schelling managed to accomplish that mission. “I am happy with this result, as I felt bad today. I had all the help from my team, and I am really glad I could keep my podium spot”, concluded Patrick.
Awet finished fifth in the final stage, and seventh in the general classification, making the Israeli ambassador in Rwanda proud. Schelling enjoyed the support of the Israeli Ambassador to Rwanda who attended the last stage.
