Who Job (Iyov) was and when he lived is the subject of great controversy in the Gemara. Many hold that he was Jewish; others hold he never existed. Regardless of who he was, his book was recorded to teach us how to understand and deal with pain and suffering. There is a lot of Jewish philosophy and ethics to be learned from studying it along with the commentaries.
