The former Minneapolis police officer charged with the murder of George Floyd has been released from prison after posting a $1 million bond.

Derek Chauvin was being held at the Minnesota Correctional Facility before being released on bail on Wednesday.

Video footage captured the former police officer kneeling on Mr Floyd's neck for eight minutes in an incident which sparked mass protests across the United States and the world.

The other three officers involved were charged with aiding and abetting murder and manslaughter.

The 44-year-old is expected to appear in court in March and could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
