Congresswoman Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) joined “Forbes Newsroom” to discuss her controversial new resolution that would prohibit “members, officers and employees of the House from using single-sex facilities other than those corresponding to their biological sex.”
The legislation comes less than two weeks after Congresswoman-elect Sarah McBride (D-Del.) became the first openly transgender person to be elected to Congress.
Speaking to Forbes, Mace escalated her attacks on McBride by stating that she believes that McBride is “absolutely” a threat to her and other women on Capitol Hill. There are no reports of McBride ever assaulting anyone, and there is no data that shows transgender individuals commit violent crimes at a higher rate than cisgender individuals. There is also no data that shows that inclusive bathroom and locker room policies lead to assaults by transgender individuals.
Mace has received intense backlash for the legislation, particularly from Democratic colleagues. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said that the bill “ is not just bigotry, this is just plain bullying.” Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vt. said, "the cruelty is the point."
Despite the criticism, Mace told Forbes that she will “die on this hill” and “fight for every woman and girl to ensure that their rights are protected.”
The question remains if the bill will pass. Republican Congressman Tom Cole (Okla.) reportedly said, "I'm not getting involved in a bathroom debate. It's not what I came to Congress for.”
Still, the South Carolina lawmaker said she is still not giving up on the issue, adding that she’s going to “force” every man in Congress “to put it on the record.”
