Slack, calm and muggy. Oh, and I forgot to mention the blazing hot sun beating down too! It is a pontoon boater and jet skier's paradise but if you're a musky hunter, these conditions often spell disaster. Oddly though over the years I have found these sweltering, nasty conditions to align with some of my best northern Wisconsin muskie catches of all time! There is a "catch" though. These types of days, although they do produce big fish for me, usually only produce a single strike. Yep, that is it. Just one strike! No other follows or sniffs. Nothing! Just one big strike that will change the course and outlook of your entire muskie season! So, the next time you encounter the late-summer dog days resist posting up lakeside with a cold brew and water-drenched towel around your neck and instead forge ahead and cast the heavy baits. The action will likely be low but the payoff could be huge!
