The easiest knot-tying method to learn is the instrument tie, which also has the advantage of using the least amount of suture material. The instrument tie is not always appropriate however, as there is less control over knot tension than with hand ties. The two-handed tie, therefore should be used when knot security is paramount. One-handed tying is useful in deep cavities, and may be faster than two-handed tying. However, it is more difficult to learn one-handed ties and one-handed ties will often not lie down square.
