A Baird's Tapir walked out of the forest to the beach at Campanario Biological Station on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. This unusual animal with a trunk-like nose is related to rhinos and horses, and is the largest wild land mammal in Costa Rica. Having this close sighting was a highlight of my recent Quest Nature Tours trip to Costa Rica and Panama. It's listed as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). 22 February 2017.
