Failed 1 Hour Glucose Test, What Next?
So you failed your 1 hour glucose test, or maybe you haven’t taken it yet and are wondering what happens if you do fail. Maybe you're super healthy and active like me, how could you possibly have gestational diabetes? Definitely watch my video for information on what the glucose test consists of and what happens if you fail.
I’ll also touch on gestational diabetes, what it is, how it poses a risk to mom and baby, and possible treatments options if you have gestational diabetes
At 28 weeks I was avoiding taking the test because I didn’t want to wait in line at the blood lab, and I honestly did not think I was at risk considering my health.
What is Gestational Diabetes?
- Too high of blood sugar, body isn’t processing sugar fast enough now that you are pregnant
- 2-10% of women have GD
Risk for Mom and Baby
- More likely to have c section, preeclampsia and type 2 diabetes after birth
- Baby is at risk for injury when being born, low blood sugar and higher risk for obesity
The Test
- Typically done between week 24-28. Drink 50 grams of glucose (a sugar) within 5 minutes, wait for blood to be drawn
- The threshold to be retested in very low so that all women who have GD are caught
My Test Failure and Outcome
- Failed 1 hour glucose test that checks for gestational diabetes, with positive value of 158mg/dl
- Doctor said I could or could not have GD and further testing was necessary
- Sometimes she sees gestational diabetes in women who are fit, it is hereditary
- She set me up for at home glucose testing after letting her know I preferred that over the 3 hour. She also set me up with an appointment with dietician
- I tested for my glucose at home for 4 days and tracked all the foods I ate
- I passed every test
- Word of advice: Do not to eat right before the test. I snack all day and had eaten spicy hot Cheetos on my way to the test.
- My friend who has a similar body type also tested positive in the 1 hour then negative in the 3hr
