Communities everywhere struggle with meeting the multiple needs of families involved in child welfare via uncoordinated service systems. In Omaha, Nebraska, key stakeholders responded to this problem by creating a novel approach to family reunification ‒ a comprehensive family-based treatment model. Better Together is a housing, substance use, mental health, and parenting program that provides behavioral health services for families involved in child protective services with the goal of moving families toward sustained recovery, reunification, and self-sufficiency. This session will outline the many lessons Better Together has learned on how to (and how not to) build a successful collaboration among diverse service providers. Participants considering such a model will learn how and when to start this type of collaboration, effective communication approaches, skills needed by staff, and the strong need to thread trauma-informed care into systems as well as with clients.
