So you’ve probably heard of henna tattoos and henna hair dyes, but what exactly is henna?
Well, henna is a dye that is derived from the henna tree, which goes by the scientific name Lawsonia inermis. Lawsonia is a small tree that grows up to 7 or 8 meters in height, and is native to Africa, Asia and Australia.
Now henna has been used for cosmetic and medicinal purposes going back at least nine thousand years.
In traditional medicine the various parts of the henna tree have been used to treat a number of conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, headaches, ulcers, diarrhea, leprosy, fever, diabetes and heart problems.
The dye in particular has been used for treating jaundice, skin diseases, venereal diseases and smallpox.
Despite its long-standing use as a medicine across the world, however, there has been hardly any modern scientific research on this remarkable plant.
The limited research that has been done ties in well with henna’s traditional folk uses, suggesting that it is indeed a remarkable plant, with a wide range of beneficial biological properties.
These include anti-diabetic activity, modulation of the immune system, protection of the liver, antioxidant effects, as well as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antifungal activity.
So how is henna used on the skin? Well, the henna dye is prepared from the dried, crushed leaves of the henna tree. These are made into a powder and then mixed with a liquid such as water or tea, though artificial chemicals can also be used to add stability and potency.
The paste must be left to sit for a certain number of hours, and can then be applied to the skin.
