When you enter the place, it feels like you travel back in time and wonder how many emperors and sultans have probably stood exactly where you are standing?
Our story started on Constantine the Great. Constantine was the first Roman emperor to convert to Christianity. After he died, his son (Constantius II) built and consecrated the first Hagia Sophia.
Then it was rebuilt by Justinian I and during his first five years and had become unpopular because of the high taxes so the people wanted him out of office. Riot came, and the emperor commanded the people to rebuild the church.
Two mathematicians designed the place, no wonder that Hagia Sophia's meaning is divine wisdom. It took them 6 years to build, importing its materials from its neighboring countries such as Greece and Syria, some countries from North Africa
In the past, they used olive oils for the lamp oil and they imported it from North Africa. They added salt to the oil in the lamps to prevent spattering. Emperors were crowned at the middle of a large circular colourful marble stones
Whether you are a Christian or a Muslim (or any religion), it doesn’t make any difference to admire its fascinating architecture and its history,
Whether it was used to be an Orthodox cathedral and museum , and presently a mosque, Aya Sofia's legacy still continues to shine and all we need to think about is how we can protect this beautiful art because it connects us to the Ottomans and Roman Empires.
It has survived for almost 1500 years, so how about we preserve it forever?
