The African Union has suspended Mali's membership with immediate effect, in response to a military takeover led by the junta leader Colonel Assimi Goita. It comes just days after the nation was also suspended from the West African regional economic bloc, ECOWAS. The African Union has warned stiffer sanctions could be handed down if the country is not returned to a civilian government.
