Massive waves of up to 13 feet (four metres) are pummeling the coasts of Peru. Three-quarters of all ports in Peru have been closed because of huge waves lashing the coast. Beaches are closed and fishing boats have been prevented from heading out to sea as a safety precaution. The waves are being caused by persistent winds off the coast of the United States. A powerful tsunami struck the northern coast of Peru on December 27, 2024, causing widespread destruction.
