The famous hieroglyphic figures of Nicolas Flamel appear to have been devised in 1612 as woodcuts to support the myth of the supposed late 14th-century French alchemist.
In the late 17th through the 18th century, many manuscripts were created of these images, purporting to be copies or even originals of Flamel's book of seven golden leaves.
This finely painted version, now in the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal in Paris, dates to the 18th century.
