You’ve heard the news that Russia tried to assassinate Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia with a chemical nerve agent. Those two are still in hospital, and if they survive, they’re likely to have permanent and serious injured.
Russia claims they didn’t do it, but the thing is, they used a type nerve agent Novichok that only Russia has the secret recipe for. It’s so secret – we only know it exists is because of a few Russian scientists who switched allegiances and declared asylum in the west.
So, because the weapon used, only Russia had, we know they did it.
In response to the attack, Britain announced the biggest economic and political sanctions in recent history, including expelling dozens of Russian diplomats.
But UK ability to actually hurt Russia with the new sanctions is limited. The UK already has strict economic sanctions on Russia, so there’s not much more they could take away. Analysts are saying that basically, Putin isn’t going to care.
Now the US is in a position to hurt Russia with sanctions. Trump has already joined a statement blaming Russia for the attack, and calling it “an assault on UK sovereignty and a breach of international law”.
They’re not wrong – This attack was not just attempted murder of two people. It’s the First ever use of nerve agents since WWII and a violation the Chemical Weapons Convention. Just to understand how serious this is, the chemical weapon Novichok is 10 times more deadly than Saran. The first responder is still in hospital and the entire area of Salisbury is still cordoned off.
But for all that talk, would the US actually impose sanctions.
Sadly, the answer – is probably not. The US has only just today imposed sanctions for Russian meddling in the 2016 election, and those sanctions are about 6 weeks late.
We’re now in a really scary situation where a sovereign nation has used new, powerful chemical weapons against another nation, and no one is going to do anything about it.
Now people have joked about the US being the world's police, but that’s actually an important job. now international conventions being violated. The United States MUST take a stand.
