Quebec’s Premier François Legault announced on Monday that the province will be reopening its primary schools and child-care centres on May 19 in the Montreal region and May 11 outside of it.
He said the reopening will be gradual and not obligatory, and the government will monitor the situation and make adjustments as necessary.
Legault added that the government is open to changing the dates and plan if the situation worsens in Quebec.
Explaining the decision, Legault said that the COVID-19 infection rate in the province’s hospitals is under control and the virus is generally not dangerous to young children.
The announcement comes as Quebec reported 84 new deaths due to COVID-19 in the province on Monday, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,579.
An increase of 875 cases was reported on Monday to a total of 24,982 confirmed COVID-19 cases province-wide.
