On the island of Sumatra, in Indonesia, an iconic species is barely hanging on. Orangutans are considered critically endangered.

From Season 2 Episode 8 "The Last Orangutans Of Sumatra": The massive wave of deforestation for oil palm production shows no sign of slowing down. Theoretically protected, the island's precious peatlands are being chewed up.

Whole forests are set on fire killing every living thing in this paradise of biodiversity. But scientists have mobilized to save the remaining orangutans. In the heart of the tropical forest, they do what they can to halt the carnage and rehabilitate the last few survivors of an uneven fight against a corrupt and merciless authority.

1000 Days For The Planet - The great adventure of the sailing ship Sedna IV continues. On the islands of Sumatra and Borneo, aggressive deforestation is ravaging the original tropical forest and forcing the last orangutangs from their homes. Gibbons also struggle to find refuge in a few, widely-scattered patches of forest, while the last of the severely threatened wild elephants cling desperately to life under attack from all sides. In the Galapagos, warming waters are wreaking havoc on coral reefs.

Ocean fishing using cyanide and explosives is an ongoing threat to the food security of many villages in Indonesia. From tracking the fearsome Komodo dragon to traditional whale hunting in small boats, an overview of the planet's biodiversity remains worrisome. But the inhabitants of the tiny island of Anuta, cut off from the modern world for generations, may well inspire new approaches for the future.
