Two note riffs offer a bigger, stronger sound and if you listen to songs by Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmy Hendrix or Angus Young, you’ll hear it right away. In this lesson, I’m going to explain the benefits of a stronger, larger sound from the use of two notes as opposed to only one. Two note chords offer a bolder perspective, plus they can also offer modifications to a riff that tend to help engage richer melodies.
The tonality of a riff will also have an essential part in the riffs balance, direction, and emotional effect. Through making a conscious decision about Major and Minor tonality a riff can sound better due to greater control over tonal color. Tonal control allows musicians to perform riffs with more sound options overall.
Another benefit of learning a lot of two note riffs will come from the physical perspective of the strum /pluck hand. Having excellent control over both pick strumming and hybrid picking leads to greater options across the sound.
Hybrid picking will help a riff to ‘pop-out’ of a song-section with more impact than strumming or flat-picking. Thus, a player who can utilize both; basic strumming along with; hybrid picking tends to have more control over the, “pluck effect.”
